Datebook: October 7 – War In Afghanistan Begins 10 Years Ago

“Operation Enduring Freedom” is the official name used by the U.S. government for the War in Afghanistan, together with a number of smaller military actions, under the umbrella of the global “War on Terror.” The war in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2011. On October 7, 2001, early combat operations including a mix of strikes from land-based bombers and carrier and submarine based cruise missiles, which signaled the start of Operation Enduring Freedom. In Former President George W. Bush’s October 7th address to the country, rhetoric included the destruction of terrorist training camps and infrastructure within Afghanistan, the capture of al-Qaeda leaders, and the cessation of terrorist activities in Afghanistan. Polls in October 2001 indicated that 88% of American supported this military action. In April 2011, a Pew Research Center Poll showed only 44% supporting NATO troop presence in Afghanistan.

St. John’s Episcopal’s Memorial Garden hosts a Blessing of the Animals Sunday at 4 p.m. Bring your pet on a leash or in a carrier, or come without your pet. Refreshments for all. The Garden’s behind the Church at 1620 West Main in Murray.

There’s a book signing with four authors from four states writing many genres at the University Bookstore at Murray State next Friday from 11 to 2. Meet Linda Swift of Kentucky, Pamela Hearon of Illinois, Laurean Brooks of Tennessee and Danielle Thorne of Georgia. Authors will be giving away print books and ebook CDs, and advice about digital publishing.

The final Paducah Bikes on Broadway of this year is Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Bring bicycles, skates, skateboards, scooters, tricycles, strollers, running or walking shoes for strolling and riding along Broadway, which will be closed to vehicular traffic between 4th and 17th during this free event. Crossing volunteers will allow traffic across Broadway at 9th and 13th.
