Datebook: August 22 – Ida Siekmann becomes first casualty of Berlin Wall 50 years ago

Polish-born Ida Siekmann had moved to Berlin and lived at 48 Bernauer Strasse in the center of Berlin. Immediately after the border between East and West Berlin was closed and 50 households at the Bernauer Strasse fled to the West. East German border troops were ordered to brick up the entrances and windows on the groundfloor of the houses on the southern side of the street. In the early morning of August 22, Siekmann, living on the third floor, jumped out of her window in an effort to flee, before firefighters were able to open the jumping-sheet. She died shortly after, thus becoming the first casualty at the Berlin wall.
