American jazz guitarist Mitchell Herbert “Herb” Ellis was born on August 4, 1921.  In addition to being a staple of west-coast studio recording sessions, Ellis is well-known for performing with the Oscar Peterson Trio from 1953 to 1958 along with pianist Peterson and bassist Ray Brown.  His inclusion in the trio provoked controversy; he was the only white person in the group in a time when racism was still very much widespread.  Ellis died on March 28, 2010.

It’s Thursday, August 4.
