Datebook: July 25 – Svetlana Savitskaya becomes 1st woman to perform a space walk 25 years ago

Svetlana Yevgenyevna Savitskaya is a former Soviet female aviator and cosmonaut who flew aboard Soyuz T-7 in 1982, becoming the second woman in space some 19 years after Valentina Tereshkova. While on the Salyut 7 space station, Savitskaya became the first woman to perform a space walk (on July 25, 1984). She was outside the space station for 3 hours 35 minutes. Of the 57 Soviet/Russian spacewalkers through 2010, she is the only female.

The Purchase Players and Community Performing Arts Center stage Don Johnson’s original comedy, Beyond the Glorious Garden this weekend and next. It’s about elderly old flames meeting up at an odd funeral. Shows are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sunday at 2. Call 270-251-9035 for $10 tickets. The Performing Arts Center is at 9th and Water Streets in Mayfield.

A Summer Book Sale benefits the McCracken County Library is Friday from 9 to 7 and Saturday from 9 to 1 in St. Paul Lutheran Church’s Gymnasium. There’s a sneak preview Thursday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The church is at 211 South 21st Street in Paducah.

The Fulton County-Hickman County Economic Development Partnership and the West Kentucky Workforce Investment Board host a Career Expo Wednesday from 10 to 2 at the Pontotoc Community Center in Fulton. The expo is free to all. Dress to meet employers from across the region who will be accepting job applications.
