American composer and songwriter Cole Porter was born June 9, 1891 (and died October 15, 1964) He was born to a wealthy family, and despite his grandfather’s wishes, he took up music as a profession, particularly musical theatre. By the 1930s, he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway stage. Unlike most of the Broadway composers, he wrote both the lyrics and the music for his songs. Among his most notable work is “Kiss Me, Kate,” “Anything Goes,” “Dubarry Was A Lady” and “You Never Know.”
