Datebook: Friday, June 3 – Confederate Memorial Day in KY and TN
Confederate Memorial Day is an official holiday and/or observance day in parts of the U.S. South as a day to honor those who died fighting for the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Nine states officially observe Confederate Memorial Day, including Tennessee. While not officially celebrated in Kentucky, it is also the birthday of Kentucky native, Jefferson Davis. While many of the reasons for the war are rightfully maligned in today’s society, the notions of individual and states rights still permeate our national dialogue. Remember today the lives that were lost, the families displaced and the immense struggle our young nation went through to obtain the freedoms we now collectively enjoy.
