Datebook: June 2 – Martha Washington turns 280

America’s first First Lady, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington was born on June 2, 1731 (and died May 22, 1802). She was never referred to as “first lady” because the term was coined after hear death. Instead, she was known as “Lady Washington.” Often depicted as a frumpy elderly woman, new research into her life has evidenced quite the contrary. Martha was a spiffy dresser, assertive and a woman of independent means (with sole control over her wealth from a previous marriage and of her childrens’ inheritance). She is also described as “loving her husband madly.” She joined George on the battlefield each year to care for and provide morale for the troops. Happy birthday Martha!
