Datebook: May 9 – Captain Blood tries to steal the Crown Jewels 340 years ago

On May 9, 1671, Irish adventurer known as Captain Thomas Blood, is captured attempting to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London. Dressed as a priest, he convinced the Jewel House keeper to hand over his pistols. Once inside, alarms went off, chaos ensued and Blood was arrested.  King Charles was amused by the attempt and made Blood a member of his court with an annual pension.

Murray State collects for the Paducah Stuff a Truck project to aid area flood victims. Bring new and unopened items to the Easley Alumni Center, Arcadia Drive and 12th Street –8 to 4:30 today, 8 to noon tomorrow. Bring bleach, household cleaning products, mops, buckets, brooms, rakes, sponges, paper towels, garbage bags, insect repellant and sunscreen.

The Stuff A Truck main collection site is at the Paducah Power System Parking Lot at 1500 Broadway, open 7 to 5 today and tomorrow.

Mayfield’s Ice House Gallery shows “The Out of Towners” – works by Susan French, Melanie Halliman and Carol Harlan. There’s an artists reception Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The Gallery is at 120 North Eighth Street in Mayfield, open Tuesday through Friday 10 to 4:30, Saturday, 10 to 1.
