Governor Steve Beshear during an interview with WKMS.

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has requested a presidential disaster declaration. The Governor flew over western Kentucky today to assess the damage from storms and floods.  The Governor stopped shortly in Murray to speak with local officials.  Reporter Angela Hatton caught up with the Governor outside some of the worst damaged buildings in town. You can hear the full interview online.

“We’re just making sure today that everything is going as well as it can go, that we’re doing everything that we can do on a state level, and with all of our state agencies to make sure we get our people through this in as good of a situation as possible,” Beshear said.

He said the state emergency management is still deciding whether to open a regional emergency operations center to oversee relief efforts in western Kentucky. Forty-eight counties and 17 cities have declared states of emergency. The Governor expects to add more communities to that list.
