Weekend Energy Preview 1/1

with one comment

Here’s what’s in the mix for this Saturday night’s Weekend Energy. The first show of the year is so heavy, it’s like weightlifting a battleship on the planet Mercury!

Dirty Disco Youth – Love (Alex Gopher Remix) – I’ve been following the music by this Austrian “wunderkind” (pictured on the right) since he began remixing in 2007. Now signed to Dim Mak, this guy is only getting better. In this week’s mix, his new “mainstream happy” single remixed with a bit more edge by Alex Gopher. Check out the video.

The Beatrabauken – Wallbreakin’ – See  this week’s ‘Discovery’ below.

Fukkk Offf – Worldwide – Just because I can’t say their name on the radio doesn’t mean this rudely-named French team should be ignored. Nearly every song these guys put out is simply amazing, including their new single, “Worldwide.”

Fiero – Disco Night – I couldn’t out find much on Daniel Olarte, aka Fiero, but Disco Night is awesome nu-disco, indie marinated to perfection. I actually like the12inch and Subdue remixes better, but I put the original in this week’s mix instead.

The Beatrabauken

German ElectroIndiePunk group The Beatrabauken have been dropping sound since 2006, and have just put out an awesome album, “Trust Sprayed Walls.” I had three of their songs from this album on my shortlist this week and went with their third single, “Wallbreakin.” What starts as an organic, catchy riff and thickly-accented English transforms into a soaringly catchy chorus. After the drop in the middle of the song, you’ll be haphazardly dancing all over the place like the people in the video. Wallbreakin’ is an unforgettable song, it’ll stay with you, you’ll like it more and more with each listen. I also recommend from this album “Puppet Disco” and “Sometimes.”

Almost Made It

Mr. Brown for Haiti

If you don’t get a feel-good, empowered vibe from watching this video, than you might be an android with faulty emotion receptors. I would have ended the show with this, but simply ran out of time. I prefer the Creolo version, in which the kids sing in that language rather than English, which I think adds to the overall sentiment. If you’re fluent in French, check out the website for more info about the artist and the project, including some behind the scenes footage. Here’s the click-thru.

Second Hour Rewind

The second hour rewind is the previous week’s first hour. Featured artists include Skrillex, Jack Beats, Emalkay, Flux Pavilion, Cakeboy and Major Lazer. This is the all-dubstep special!

“Crank up your stereo, bust out the strobe light and kick up the bass.”

Weekend Energy has been blowing out car stereo systems, upsetting the neighbors and enhancing the night life of western Kentucky every weekend since July 2007 on WKMS. Host Matt “McG” Markgraf pours through hundreds of songs each week to create “the loudest show on public radio” featuring the best techno, dance and electronica from around the world.

Weekend Energy airs Saturdays on 91.3 WKMS from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Stream it live on Saturday nights.
